Bureau of Meteorology: 2016

Product Development, Human Centred Design, Collaborative Design, Research Methods & Analysis

A year long interdisciplinary team project between Swinburne University’s Design Factory Melbourne and the Bureau of Meteorology. ‘FarmSense’ was a system designed to assist farmers in receiving better weather data in blackspot areas around Australia, leading to more informed agricultural decisions; whilst benefiting the Bureau by gaining more data from remote areas of Australia.

Based on extensive supporting research conducted, the design solution combines industrial design, scientific study, business expertise, branding and digital aspects to create this conceptual and innovative system. At the end of the project, the team presented and pitched the concept to the client, academia and the public alike at a gala event held at the university.

Through an extensive process of ideation, research, testing and refinement, several products and prototypes were developed with the goal of recording weather data remotely and affordably. The FarmSense Network includes a main weather sensor device, various attachments, and concepts for an accompanying app that would be used to control the device and receive key weather data.

A FarmSense report document was created for the client which contains a years worth of detailed collaborative work, from key research findings, target audience studies and business strategies, to product design concepts and branding ideation.
