Design Factory Melbourne: 2016

Multidisciplinary & Collaborative Design, Research, Engineering, Proof-of-concept, 3D Modelling

Swinburne Design Factory Melbourne (DFM) is a world-leading innovation lab, the third founding Design Factory in a network of global partners – and the first in the southern hemisphere. The program facilitates collaborative research and human-centred design projects between university and industry leaders.

During my time with the program I had the opportunity to create solutions and key insights to diverse innovation challenges through interdisciplinary teamwork, product design and development, market research, user-experience, design theory, prototyping, and conceptualisation.

Low Carbon Living CRC

A collaborative research and design venture working with the CRC for Low Carbon Living who aim to “lower carbon emissions in the built environment”.

The team conducted a breadth of primary and secondary research into the areas of sustainability and renovation to better understand the target market of ‘forever home owners’. From this research process a report document was created, which contained detailed findings and analyses. Additionally several concepts were designed with the goal of educating the public and builders alike about the the value of using sustainable, environmentally friendly products in building and renovation practices.

The concepts included: an interactive modular display home that would travel across Australia showcasing the functionality and effectiveness of sustainable products in a home environment; and a deliverable lifestyle package that teaches people engaging and cost effective ways to make their home more sustainable.

Kinetic Wheel – Swinburne’s Centre For Micro-Photonics

An interdisciplinary team project between Design Factory Melbourne and Swinburne’s Centre for Micro-Photonics, who are working on a breakthrough in supercapacitor technology. The Nano Project team was tasked with designing an innovative proof-of-concept that would incorporate the new technology and showcase its unique capabilities.

Through extensive research and analyses the Kinetic Wheel was conceived. A device that generates electricity through regenerative breaking, energy which is stored in a wheelchair wheel and used to assist those with mobility needs in scenarios such as going up steep hills.
